Alpine Resort - History of a Door County Resort in Wisconsin

Alpine Resort & Golf History

A Tradition for over 95 years!

The Alpine, Door County's largest resort, was built in 1921 by brothers Paul and John Bertschinger. A few years earlier, Paul, a butcher in Milwaukee, came to visit his brother, John, who operated a lumber yard. During this visit, John mentioned to Paul that he recently sold a tract of land on Green Bay. Upon seeing the property, the brothers decided to re-purchase the land (at twice the price sold) for a potential resort business.

Most of the lumber and hardware used was transported by horse and sleigh over the ice from Marinette. Electricity was supplied by an on-property generator. Ice for beverages was cut from the harbor during the winter and stored until summer.

The Alpine officially opened for business in 1922. At that time when automobile transportation was not yet widespread, many of our guests left Milwaukee and Chicago by Goodrich Steamers, boats that transported them to Sturgeon Bay. The Yellow Cab Bus brought them the rest of the way to Egg Harbor. Rooms at that time were $18 to $25 per week with three meals included each day.

In 1927 Paul and John decided to expand. They more than tripled the size of the main lodge (to over 300 feet in length) and added more rooms, lobbies and a dining area. In the years that followed they built additional cottages and added a golf course.

From 1960 to 1993, siblings Bill Bertschinger and Dorothy Bertschinger Hoslett (second generation) managed the operations. During their tenure, the Alpine underwent extensive remodeling and renovation. In 1976 an additional nine holes were added to the golf course.

Today the Alpine consists of Inn rooms, cottages and housekeeping homes. In addition, we have a beautiful 36-hole golf course, a heated pool, sand beach, boating, fishing, tennis, bikes, shuffleboard, game room and nightly entertainment during July and August. One of the main attractions of the Alpine continues to be the delicious breakfasts and dinner served at the Hof Restaurant and Lounge. The Hof also provides one of the most spectacular water views in Door County.

In the 1990s, the third generation of Bertschingers began to operate the resort. For 95 years, the Bertschinger family has continued to provide their guests gracious hospitality, exciting activities, tranquil surroundings and beautifully refurbished facilities maintained in the historic character of the Alpine.
